Using DJGPP and other UNIX-like tools to manage servers
 
DJGPP is a collection of UNIX-like tools for DOS/Windows that has been ported from the GNU project. For a better understanding of what we mean by UNIX-like, see gnu.org. We've found DJGPP indespensible for tweaking files for automated installs from the command prompt. With this version you can run the utilities from DOS, Windows95/98, or NT.

Using the LMHOSTS file to backup WINS
 
In addition to resolving NetBIOS names for small networks, the LMHOSTS file can be used to back up WINS. Since the cached entries are referred to first, you can manually reset the cache of a corrupt or missing domain by reloading the entries in the LMHOSTS file.

Using the Net Use Command
 
A commonly used command in Windows NT is the net use command. This command, which you type at an MS-DOS prompt, can be utilized to access other Windows NT machines, Windows 95 machines, or Novell Netware servers. It will also allow you to connect to Windows 95 machines. Note: In order to access other computers' drives, they must be shared.
