I have came across this issue several times now, so thought it would be worthwhile posting it.
When you open a saved VMware virtual server, it can eat all your machines physical CPU, almost cripling the machine. Every time it has turned out the Virtual Server had a multiprocessor HAL installed, whilst I was running it on a single processor machine.
To resolve this issue, open up Device Manager in the virtual machine, select update driver for the Computer, Power\HAL properties and manually select a single processor HAL. After a reboot, everything returns to normal!
