I have installed Skype on my workstation. As far as free internet calls go - it is spot on. However...

I had to install IIS to support some application development I am working on at the moment. IIS installed fine, but the Default Website could not start. When attempting to manually start it, it gave the error message:

Quote :

Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred

I also got the following error in the Event Viewer:

Quote :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 115
Date: 08/12/2005
Time: 14:32:07
User: N/A
Computer: BRIAN
Description:
The service could not bind instance 1. The data is the error code.

Microsoft knowledge base basically stated that a program was already using the port it was attepting to start under - in my case the default port 80.
To find the culprit I ran

Code :

netstat -ano

The o part of the command line parameter give the process PID, matching this to the process in Task Manager, it turns out Skype had already locked this port. By killing the Skype process, I could then start the website in IIS.

It also seems that Skype will grab a random high port if port 80 is already in use - so basically it comes down to whichever grabs port 80 first - definately worth watching out for!
