Windows Home Server deals with file storage at two levels: Shared Folders and Disks. In the interest of Microsoft Excel files, it is advised not to store them on a storage media that is external to the storage pool. At times, when you store Excel workbooks on a media like USB and share them via network, you might experience that the files get corrupt. Such events might occur due to several possible reasons. However, the file thus corrupted should be restored from backup. If you don't have any valid file backup available, you need to scan the corrupted file using Excel Repair software.

To illustrate this, consider that you store some Excel workbooks on a USB drive that is attached to your Windows Home Server system. You don't put the drive in storage pool to avoid issues that root from WHS and share them. After this, though not immediately, you come across errors that suggest that either the file is corrupt or server access is not available. You encounter such errors even if WHS server is working and accessible. Additionally, when you try to access the file after copying it to a local media, the file is corrupted with no access to data.

Cause

Since the USB drive is not included in the storage pool, the Excel file corruption could result due to external issues such as network errors, faults in USB connection and so forth. However, you are suggested not to use edit the files directly on a Windows Home Server system.

Solution

To repair and recover corrupted Excel files, you should follow these suggestions:

  • Try opening the Excel workbook using 'Open and Repair' feature of the application.

  • Try saving the file in HTML or XML spreadsheet format.
