  • 802.11i, WPA, RSN and What it all Means to Wi-Fi Security
We've all heard about the flaws and vulnerabilities in WEP, but the effort to create a standard that provides better security for wireless networks has been a long and bumpy one. The IEEE's 802.11i project has been implemented, in part, by the Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and by the Robust Secure Network (RNS). What does it all mean to you, the wireless user or network administrator? In this article, we take a look at the new wireless networking security mechanisms and how you can use them to protect your Wi-Fi network.

  • A First Look at Microsoft's Anti Spyware Beta
Over the last couple of years, spyware has grown from being a nuisance into being an epidemic. Although many tools exist for fighting spyware, they largely focus on the recovery of infected systems and have been mostly ineffective in the war against spyware. A few weeks ago however, Microsoft unveiled the first beta of their own anti spyware solution. Although this software is capable of disinfecting an infected system, its primary goal is to prevent the initial infection. In this article, I will explain how this software works and share my initial impressions of it with you.

  • A Taxonomy of DDoS Attacks and DDoS Defense Mechanisms PDF File
This paper proposes a taxonomy of distributed denial-ofservice attacks and a taxonomy of the defense mechanisms that strive to counter these attacks. The attack taxonomy is illustrated using both known and potential attack mechanisms. Along with this classification we discuss important features of each attack category that in turn define the challenges involved in combating these threats. The defense system taxonomy is illustrated using only the currently known approaches. The goal of the paper is to impose some order into the multitude of existing attack and defense mechanisms that would lead to a better understanding of challenges in the distributed denial-of-service field.

  • Access Controls: What is it and how can it be undermined?
We have stoplights on city streets, and locks on the doors of our homes. What these things have in common is that they are access controls. The world of computer security is very much the same in that it employs various ways to limit access. In this article we will cover several ones and discuss their usage.

  • Analysis of Buffer Overflow Attacks
What causes the buffer overflow condition? Broadly speaking, buffer overflow occurs anytime the program writes more information into the buffer than the space it has allocated in the memory. This allows an attacker to overwrite data that controls the program execution path and hijack the control of the program to execute the attacker's code instead the process code. For those who are curious to see how this works, we will now attempt to examine in more detail the mechanism of this attack and also to outline certain preventive measures.
